In celebration of the importance of history in shaping the identity and character of communities, Mayor Gary Blackburn has proclaimed May 2019 as National Preservation Month. Mayor Blackburn read this proclamation before the Garfield City Council at their May 14 meeting.

Cosponsors of the Preservation Month designation for May 2019 were the City of Garfield, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, the Department of Arkansas Heritage, the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Register of Historic Places.

Mayor Blackburn called upon the citizens of Garfield to observe National Preservation Month, along with other citizens of the United States, in the month of May.

The observance of National Preservation Month can be done in many ways, including the following:

  • learn more about the architecture and development of local buildings
  • read about the history of a city or region
  • preserve properties with significance to a community
  • visit historic sites as an individual or in a group

Citizens of Garfield do not have to travel a great distance to connect with historic places. The City of Garfield is home to the Garfield Elementary School, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Learn more about Garfield Elementary’s history here. Garfield is also only a few miles from the Pea Ridge National Military Park, which is open to the public year round from 6:00 AM until dusk.
